Paul Leslie Aiton-Toddler killer, applies for parole

UPDATE-12/01/11 THIS GUTLESS MURDERING BULLY IS GETTING OUT ON BAIL TOMORROW, HE WILL SLIP AWAY TOO WITHOUT MUCH ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THE FLOODS. PEOPLE ARE KEEN TO CATCH UP WITH HIM WHEN HE GETS OUT THANK GOD!

My Say I remember this one like it was yesterday. This huge bully Aiton, finally beat his tiny stepson Daniel to death after months of abuse. Now near 20 years after the fact this mongrel is coming up for parole. A date every victims family dreads in this country, with the weak arse sentences and cuts offenders get…

Guys like him deserve nothing, earn nothing while in jail, and should be rotting  just like the poor little chap he beat on a near daily basis because he got annoyed! He used to brag to mates how he got the boy to stand “Star jump” style and kick him, as if he was football practice…Now I can see letting white collar crimes out for once being greedy etc but sick bastards like this deserve no sympathy or leeway.I do not want to report here in 15 months he lost it with another innocent lad who happens to be the son of a needy mum he picks up…

A photo of little Daniel Valerio before he was beaten to death by Paul Aiton

THE hulking thug who beat little Daniel Valerio to death in one of Australia’s most shocking child abuse cases will make his bid for freedom tomorrow.

Paul Leslie Aiton has served 18 years in prison for the murder of his two-year-old stepson and he wants to be out by November.

Daniel’s death, after months of savage violence by Aiton, led to the introduction of mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse in Victoria.

Almost two decades after his death, Daniel’s battered face remains a symbol of ineptitude by authorities who were supposed to save him.

He died after his internal organs were crushed when he was punched by Aiton at their West Rosebud home.

Daniel’s grandfather said he hoped Aiton felt remorse. “He was a lovely kid,” Ian Ottway said.

Aiton’s bid for freedom sparked a plea for authorities to warn single mums about starting relationships with child beaters.
Child Wise executive director Bernadette McMenamin said mothers who began relationships with offenders should be told by authorities of their background.

Adult Parole Board general manager David Provan said members would consider reports and recommendations from Community Correctional Services before making a decision on Aiton. Aiton, 49, will not appear in person.

The 188cm tall killer – who weighed 105kg at the time – was later to say he “just lost it” because Daniel was screaming and crying.

But former work colleagues told Aiton’s trial he made sickening boasts about his treatment of the boy. They told how Aiton would order the boy to stand in the shape of a star then kick him from behind.

They also gave evidence that he referred to throwing Daniel against a wall and watching him slide down it, shoving the child face-first into his own faeces and lifting him by the hair as he slept.

Evidence was also tendered that Aiton beat the boy’s penis with a wooden spoon when he urinated in the bath. A post-mortem examination found Daniel suffered 104 bruises and two broken collarbones in his brief life.

Aiton, who initially tried to deny killing Daniel, was convicted by a Supreme Court jury in 1993.

In sentencing him, Justice Philip Cummins said: “I consider you have not shown remorse for the death. You have shown concern for your own position.”

Aiton was sentenced to 22 years’ maximum, with a minimum 18 with good behaviour.

Grandad Mr Ottway said he hoped Aiton felt some remorse.

Mr Ottway said Aiton had served his time and he hoped what had happened to Daniel was a one-off.

Daniel’s case led to major change in child welfare in Victoria after it was revealed inaction by authorities failed to stop the abuse.

A judicial inquiry found 21 people, including five doctors, Community Services Victoria and police were involved in Daniel’s case after CSV received anonymous calls he was being beaten.

Laws were later introduced making it mandatory for police and health and teaching professionals to report suspected child abuse.

Aiton had lived with Daniel’s mother, Cheryle Butcher, after they met through an introduction agency. Ms Butcher last year spoke out for the first time in 16 years to beg authorities to do more to help children in peril from abuse.

Aiton’s earliest possible release date is November 26.

A Corrections Victoria spokeswoman said prisoners on parole were closely supervised.

Here are more comments from concerned Australians…

We shouldn’t have to tell the Parole Board why this monsters should NEVER be released. We have to presume that the people sitting on the board have a degree of sense and responsibility..Often they have proved otherwise..This is another chance to tell us that they will do the right thing and keep this man locked up till he dies. He abuses and beats a little boy to death… and now wants to be let out..Lets hope the Parole Board does the right thing by little Daniel.

I would love to show him first hand what if feels like to slide down a wall, stand in a star and get kicked and pull his hair until his head came off. I dearly hope that those anonymous calls to the CSV were made by Aiton’s workmates. Inaction on their part would have been reprehensible (putting aside the shameful inaction of the 21 individuals involved in Daniel’s case). As for Ms Butcher, I CANNOT believe that she, at no point, suspected that Aiton was abusing her son.

This man repeatedly and deliberately hurt a two year old toddler. It was not just a “one off” event. The poor child lived in terror in his short life, as this evil man revelled in sadistical power over this baby-child. Daniel’s own home was a place of nightmares and pain, but there is no where else to go when you are only two. The man is evil and will hurt again when he is out of prison. He has already shown he can cross way over the line of human decency. I don’t understand why he didn’t get life!

He has served 18 years. If he is released now, it will be ‘because of good behavior’ as his sentence stated. The only reason he would be thought to have ‘good behavior’ is because there are no small defenseless children to beat up in prison. When (if) he gets out then we will see if his behavior is ‘good’ or if he starts beating up small children again. And if he does it will be because the courts released this monster when they shouldn’t have done so. This type of personality doesn’t change. He will ‘beat’ again. Keep him behind bars where he can’t harm anyone else’s child.

Just take a look at this beautiful innocent babies face in the photo. And this was before his fatal beating by the coward who now wishes to be released from his well deserved prison cell in November. How dare he even think he has rights and requests. What goes around comes around his sentencing is nothing compared to what the universe is going to lay before him for his shocking actions. I am surprised that none of the work colleagues called the police after hearing his disgusting boasts of torture on this tiny little boy. If the community had a say in the sentencing this man would never ever be released. This child experienced a lifetime of horror and fear. Shame on the legal system for his ridiculous short term sentence of eighteen years (minimum)from twenty years. To the Parole Board, do not release this disgusting person out the baby lost his life, he must also lose his..

He also needs to serve the full sentence to send a message to others that this behaviour is intolerable.

Considering the animal ‘joked’ to his work colleagues at the time about the pain he inflicted on Daniel and his brother – he obviously showed a lot of remorse! He should be left in jail to rot for the rest of his pathetic life. If the parole board do grant him freedom (and I am sure they will), please publicise the whereabouts of this cretton and maybe the disgusted public can pick him up, throw him against a wall and watch him slide down like he did to poor Daniel?! This just makes me feel sick.. This animal took a child’s life. He took away any chance little Daniel had of growing up, going to school, playing with friends, falling in love, getting married, having children and watching them grow up. Possibly 80+ years of life was taken from Daniel. The animal should remain in jail for at least that long. He didn’t just take away 18 or 20years. He took away a lifetime and he should have to repay that. By my calculations, he still has about 60years to go. I hope you rot!

This is one of the many reasons as to why the people should bring back the death penalty because those dead people can NEVER commit murder again. Michael Portillo, a political commentator and MP for the UK, had studied various methods of execution documented in a video (http://videosift.com/video/How-to-Kill-a-Human-Being-in-search-of-a-painless-death). He showed the various methods of execution and the flaws that are inherited. In the video Michael demonstrates a flawless and humane method for execution if reintroduces. Nitrogen asphyxiation has been used for euthanising animals which have been approved by various animal rights groups. It is cheap, easily to install, does not require a special skill to operate it and mostly, the condemned does not feel any pain before meeting his or her maker. Australia should bring back the death penalty to murderous crimes and similar however use the Nitrogen asphyxiation method.

Disturbing, violent, sad, traumatic, painful, chilling, fright, fear and so much more. This is what this defenseless child felt and experienced as this coward killed and murdered him. Has this coward felt the same as young Daniel? I believe not, so why should he be permitted to experience more? I support to keep him locked away for life and may he be removed from the prison cell in a body bag and then just tossed into a bin like the human genetic filth that he is. Do not release this pathetic coward !!!

As tough as it is to say, if this person is released, the only people you have to be angry at are the authorities for the light sentence. He has served his time and that’s that. He should be let out as he has done all that has been legally asked of him. He should have been given life and we wouldn’t be in this situation we are in.

This man should never be released. He should have been given a life sentence. Our laws must be changed that anyone who does this to an innocent child should get life imprisonment. If I was Daniels mother I would not have stayed with this monster or allowed him to lay a finger on him, but she may have been a victim too. It makes me sad this little boy would have been 20 now wasn’t given the chance to make a life for himself.

He has taken the life of an innocent child & the system entertains the idea of parole! This depraved, gutless animal should remain incarcerated for life. I’m surprised fellow inmates have let him survive his time inside. I can only hope he has been subjected to incredible pain, torture & shame. Close the door & lock it for good. His acts have forfeited the right to live amongst society.

  1. Just to put thinks in to perspective, John Lennon’s killer, Mark Chapman has been knocked back for parole for the 6th time, after 30 years in jail…For killing John Lennon.

Now that is not because who John Lennon was but for what he did, shoot a defenceless man in the back. So how defenceless is a 2 year old toddler, tell me, is 20 years enough?

  2. This man should NEVER be released. Daniel didn’t get a second chance so why should he? What makes it worse is that this wasn’t a one off incident. It wasn’t like he just snapped and in the heat of the moment killed him. He tortured this poor child repeatedly before finally ending his too short but painful life. If it was up to me he would NEVER see freedom again. However I suppose one thing to consider is if he gets out on parole at least he’ll be monitored and hopefully will not get the opportunity to do this again.

all the suffering i have had to go through with my family. I am the partner of the lagte daniel valerio’s brother benjamin valerio. Benjamin also suffered what his brother did but was old enough to sort endure the pain. Paul aiton should not be released at all. He killed an innocent child because they where crying because a big old scary man was there screaming. if i saw the ugly F*** too id be screaming. What possibly could a 2 year old do to you to make you wanna kill him. Its hard because everyday my daughter Daniella ( whose name is in memory of her uncle ) looks more and more like him. If people could understand even after all these years we are still greiving about Daniel, it’d make the jury’s minds alot smarter and keep Paul Aiton locked up for good

      1. hey robbo,
thanks for feeling my pain and my familys pain. thanks for everyones sympathy towards my brother in law….
But the put downs towards my mother in law “Cheryl Butcher” is not on. She was a women trapped in a relationship with a monster. She was frightened like no tomorrow. What could a women do to stop this. When knowing that it was happening could also happen to her if she where to say anything. My mother in law was not safe at all. People have to put there selves in her shoes and understand how hard it was for her to be there yet alone be in this relationship with this dog. She does not deserve what everyone is saying about her because deep down she has lost her baby boy and nothing will ever replace that. She now has4 grandchildren but the pain of Daniel will always be there. I hope Paul Aiton doesnt get parole because if he does i will find the MotherF***** and ill show him what its like to live with this. Everyday goes by and theres not a thort in world about how me and my partner bens life would be with Daniel here. Daniel would be 22 this year as we share the same birthday. He didnt desevre to have a not step father but dog of a mothers boyfriend to treat him the way he did. I hope the 18 years he did serve was served with beating and hidings in jail. And i hope to god the parole board see that he doesnt desevre to have a live at all. Daniel got to live 2 yeARS OF HIS LIFE SO WHY THE F*** should paul even live to see daylight again. It just makes me sick to think that peope would actually let him out. For his sake if he doesnt want to be dead when he walks free stay in jail. Thers alot of people out there that WILL take matters in there own hands when they find you PAUL LESLIE AITON YOU DOG………..

        1. I’m sorry … you have been brainwashed into believing your mother in law’s excuses. Perhaps you find it easier to deal with this sickening tragedy by believing that she had no way out. If that helps you guys cope and keep your family together with their ‘loving grandmother’ then so be it. Perception is reality after all I suppose.

You say… “What could a women do to stop this. When knowing that it was happening could also happen to her if she where to say anything”.
As a mother of 2 children who I brought into this world to protect to the death, give a happy childhood, love and cherish, let me give you a simple answer :
          LEAVE.
FLEE WITH THE CHILDREN AND HIDE 1000 KMS AWAY WHEN HE HAS LEFT THE HOUSE !
          DIE FOR YOUR CHILDREN
PUT YOUR CHILD’S LIFE FIRST – YOURS LAST.

Please wake up, and I certainly hope you don’t view the priority of your children’s safety in the same way your mother in law did. She is certainly no role model for mother of the year.

If women in the Middle East, repressed by the Taliban, can flee to protect their child – I’m sure in a country like Australia with women’s shelters, police protective services etc – I’m sure your mother in law could have.

Unless she is mentally retarded she has no excuse.

A parent should die protecting their child, not allow some 2 bit loser boyfriend bash and torture their child in front of their very eyes.

This was a truly disturbing and brutal crime. Eighteen years is inadequate by anyone’s standards. It is my sincerest hope that this monster is NOT released and Daniel’s ‘mother’ refrains from spewing garbage from her mouth regarding child abuse awareness. She clearly stood by and allowed this to happen. Australia also needs to introduce laws to convict bystanders for enabling child abuse. RIP Daniel

Daniel would not have even been the same age as this scum when convicted. How is this justice. He would have been a young 20 year old man, just starting out in life. With his gorgeous eyes and luscious lips, and the world at his feet. If something is not done to keep this creep away from children he will do it again. Cruelty of this kind does not just dissipate. People who do these things should serve a sentence that reflects the term of the average for which this victim would have lived. Now that’s what I’d call justice.

I can understand the families pain and the want to keep the killer behind bars forever, If it were my child I am sure I would be the same. But if he is refused and kept inside for another 4yrs to serve his full term will there be more pleas to make it longer then? There is no amount of prison time to make up for the loss of life, espically an innocent child, but then how long does one have to serve before they are able to say they did there time, it’s a double edged sword.

No. Will he keep some people out of jail? No. Will he be a consistant threat to innocent lives? Yes. Keep him in jail, or better yet, let him be tested for products that are generally treated on animals… I’m sick to my stomach hearing about innocent animals having products tested on them… Test the products on scum like this.. Can’t help thinking why the mother never done more to protect her child. I hope Paul Aiton never gets to harm another vulnerable little child again. This little boy would have been terrified all of the time wondering when the next hit would come. Children should be protected at all costs from abuse, especially mothers in new relationships who suddenly take a disliking to their child, neglecting them and not doing their best for them. That doesn’t happen with all mothers, who form new relationships after the one has ended with the child’s father. The child’s health and well being is more important than keeping a new relationship together, any signs of mistreatment by the defacto to a child, must be immediately stopped. Better still, when a parent enters a new relationship with someone who is not the parent of their child, as part of the relationship rules, demand the child be treated with dignity and respect and no abuse will be tolerated. Not only will it save the life of the child, it will save years of torment to a child who survives that sort of abuse.

It is about time that we had a sentence of life without parole. In other words life means life. People may say that 18 years is a long time. This little boy would have been 20 today. His life was snuffed out. Lets look at far harsher sentences for this type of crime. In NSW the Anita Colby killers will never be released. This type of horrific crime should be in future treated the same way.

Any human who sees fit to harm a child in any way should be locked up for good, they do not deserve respect or freedom. Think back to being a child and how you looked up to adults with such adoration, what this poor child and countless other children must have felt, it just crushes my heart.

Mongrels like this should never see the light of day. I cannot see any reason why he should be released back onto an unsuspecting public, because as sure as the sun rises, if he reoffends, the jury will not be allowed to know of his criminal past and his sick, twisted ways. There are to many do-gooders who say he will have learnt his lesson but this always seems to come at the expense of another innocent victim and then it is always too late. How many women and children need to be raped and abused by feral pigs that deserve nothing less than perhaps the death penalty before the government takes real action in changing the laws that currently do not protect the victims. Our punishments need to fit the crimes and should be as harsh as the crime, they should also increase the penalties to show the criminals that there will be punishment and justice will be done. If a sentence is 22 years then it should be 22 years, no time off for good behaviour, if it is 22 years there should be no minimum allowed. This should apply to all sentences regardless of the time, 5,8,25 years, they should be served in entirety because you can count on the fact that the victims families have LIFE sentences

He would wake me up at 6 in the morning trying to force a beer down my throat and if I refused he would come back with a handful of his own excrement and smear it on my bed. Another time he smashed every wall in the rented house with a sledge hammer including the front door, bath and furniture that wasn’t his. This is just a very small example of what he was like. I was out of there quick smart. This sad and sorry excuse for a human has no regard for anyone or anything except himself and gets off on other peoples pain. He is beyond help and should be locked up for life for what he did. Rot in hell Aiton you pig.

  8. Daniel is my little brother. It warms my heart that so many people feel so strongly about this. I would like to thank you all for your support (and yes, even your rage). I wish I had been allowed to testify, but at 6 years old it wasn’t the done thing. There is so much I could tell you all about our “mother”; where she was, what her part in all this was. Perhaps one day I will speak out, but I don’t think now is the right time.

I don’t think Paul should ever be let out. I also don’t believe he deserves protective custody. It’s only a matter of time before the daughter of his wife Linda shows up in the obituaries. The man should be on the sex offenders registry, and no doubt would be if I’d been allowed to speak out all those years ago. I also think our mother should have been punished. Sadly at the time there were no laws regarding enabling child abuse/etc, and when they did come in… they were not retroactive. Shame, seeing as she not only ignored the violence but actively encouraged it. She’s as sick and twisted as Paul.

I just want to cry, and as a mum of 2 little children I can’t comprehend how a human can have it in them to do this. But we forget we are dealing with sick people who are not like normal human beings. I can’t get my head around a mother allowing this to happen. I’m sorry, but she and the Jaiden Leskie type mothers are equally as guilty as their sadistic, abusive bastard boyfriends. As for the grandparents, for God’s sake … if my parents thought for a second that one of their grandchildren had been abused in any way they would kidnap my children and disappear interstate until they got help. Sadly though, all these people now have life sentences of grief and they have to live with that.
I simply do not understand why we apply the same rights, liberties and rules to people who are so far out of normal society standards.
How can this man ever be released ? That child had possibly 70+ years of life to live, and yet our ‘justice’ system only puts worth on his life to about the age of 20.
I want to see a referendum on bringing back the death sentence in Australia, and I bet the majority would say YES. No Government has the guts to do it though as they know what the answer will be then they have to face it.
